Some cities are better than others to visit, and we had a great time in the Big D. Yeah, I’m talkin’ about Dallas. This weekend’s stop was totally off the hook. I was figuring on a low key weekend until I saw Mr. TiLube/MotoXXX himself, Joe, mixin’ it up with Tony Wenks at the steakhouse next to our hotel.
Now we all know it is a good life for the riders on the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series, but when team owners/managers start hanging out you know things are for real. These guys are really livin’ the dream. On Friday night I met S, YES our show manager with the one letter name, at the airport and we rode to the hotel together. We thought it would be a good idea to score some chow and the lady at the front desk said the food next door was great, so we walked over and sat at the bar, that way we wouldn’t look like we were having a romantic dinner for two. As soon as we sat down Dirt Bike Mike and a buddy of his came in. Obviously we started yackin’ and before we knew it the entire Toyota AMA Arenacross crew had filled up the smallish bar area. I’m talking about all the track guys like: Pete Henderson, Mad Mike, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Billy “the Kid”, Mr. Clean aka Travis, Tara, Stephanie, Liz and of course Pam plus a host of other people. As I mentioned earlier the TiLube/MotoXXX guys came in along with two top East Coast Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM Championship, guys. Everyone in the place kept coming up and asking who the guys were and when they found out they started asking for autographs. We met a ton of motocross fans in the heart of North Texas. It was a late night but everyone had a blast.
I didn’t have anything scheduled for Saturday morning so I decide to take a trip down to Texas Stadium to look around. I got an invite last week to tour the facility and I jumped at the opportunity. The Dallas round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM Championship is held there and the Cowboys had a home playoff game this weekend. What really blew my mind about the place was the fact that even though it is a great venue they are building a brand new one billion dollar stadium to house the Dallas Cowboys just down the road. Man, I need a gig like that! I spent a couple of hours walking around putting the voodoo whammy on the ’Boys, and it worked because they went down to the Giants on Sunday. Sorry Gavin! I met S back at the hotel because we had to pick up Brie at the airport. On our way to Reunion Arena we went by Texas Stadium and I told Brie, who is not much of a football fan, that the Cowboys were playing there on Sunday and she said, “You mean they are going to play in THAT place! How are they going to get it finished by tomorrow!” She thought the hole in the roof was unfinished. S was driving and almost ran off the road he was laughing so hard. After we regained our composure we headed to the arena to get to work. We had a GREAT show and afterward we had a surprise 60th birthday party for Mike Lambert. Dirt Bike Mike was caught completely off guard and we ended up hanging around the venue a lot later than we usually do. Josh Demuth was in the house and I talked to him about the hand injury he suffered in December during a practice/photo session and he told me he would be back racing Supercross in late March. That is great news for the man who holds the record for the most Arenacross wins in a season. (33)
Dallas was a ton of fun and I want to send a shout out to Donald, Denise and Donnie for keeping me company during the Giants-Cowboys game in the Admirals club at the airport. It was great to talk football and hang out with them. I look forward to getting back to Dallas! See you next week in Albuquerque.
