The AMA Toyota Arenacross Series raced in front of a sellout crowd on Saturday night in Pikeville. There was not a seat to be found in the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center! The riders were pumped and the action began with the Lites Class. Brad Modjewski and Jim Chester were there in the beginning, but slowly faded as Kentucky resident Justin Sipes rose to the top after a terrible start. “Gnarly” Charlie Morrison, sponsored by Pro Circuit, outlasted Danny Smith to the finish as they placed second and third respectively.
There was a lot of lead swapping going on in the Arenacross Class. From the beginning, Matt Barnes grabbed the holeshot but crashed in the whoops on lap one forcing a couple of accidents, which was good news for Tuff Racing’s Brock Sellards who got by unscathed. Sellards lead for three laps and then had a very uncharacteristic “get-off” as he exited the whoops on lap four, which put Travis Sewell, of Westville, Indiana in the lead…but not for long as Justin Sipes, backed by Gateway Kawasaki stole the lead and kept it for the duration. Placing third was Scott Metz, who did in incredible job just staying out of the carnage, which seemed to be all over the track.
A sellout crowd, good show, and a great time had by all in Pikeville…we do not know if any of the decendants were those of the Hatfield’s or McCoy’s…but we do know that the feud will continue in Louisville, next week, until then, keep it in the dirt! Mikey
